ZIKA VIRUS

What is Zika virus? Zika Virus disease is caused by the Zika virus and was first discovered in 1947. It is named after the Zika Forest in Uganda. The virus can be transmitted by Aedes mosquito, mainly by Aedes aegypti which, in Australia, can be found in Tropical North Queensland. It is not usually found in other parts of Australia. The aedes mosquito is also known to transmit viruses like Dengue and Ross River Fever and is sometimes called the “Dengue” or “Yellow Fever” mosquito. How can I catch Zika Virus? The Zika Virus, like Dengue and Ross River Fever viruses, is spread if you are bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus. Recent cases have only been linked to travellers from countries where Zika is known.

WHY DO MOSQUITOES ALWAYS BITE ME?

Am I Simply Unlucky? Are you a mozzie magnet? Or are you one of those lucky people with natural mosquito repellent superpowers? It turns out there really are two extremes — but if you’re one of the unlucky 20 per cent of the population that gets bitten more often than everyone else, you probably already knew that. So, apart from forgetting to use insect repellent, what makes some people more attractive to mozzies than others? A Mozzie's Sense of Smell. Mosquitoes have a keen sense of smell, apparently, and they have a thing for carbon dioxide. People who exhale more CO2 tend to be targets. So that means larger people and those with high metabolic rates—or people who’ve just been exercising—are especially prone.
